The Berkeley College women's tennis team competed in their first match since being announced as a varsity sport this past spring. The Knights traveled to Brooklyn, NY to battle the Pratt Institute Cannoneers. Despite a valiant effort, the Knights fell to Pratt by a score of 9-0.
In doubles competition, Pratt Institute's No. 1 team of Agata Jakubowska and Gabriella Guerra turned back Berkeley's combination of Victoria Mikalsen-Sandstand and Alexandra Kadyakin by a score of 8-0. At No. 2 doubles, the Cannoneers' Carson Stanch and Sarah Conant defeated the Knights' Marie Evje and Jigme Sangmo 8-0, and No. 3 doubles saw Pratt's Sara Berndt and Luija Zhu beat Berkeley's duo of Elisabeth Enriquez and Urszula Zych, 8-0.
The Cannoneers won all six singles sets to account for the 9-0 final score. At No.1 singles, it was Jakubowska downing Mikalsen-Sandstad, 8-1. Stanch turned back Kadyakin 8-0 at No. 2 singles, and at No. 3 Conant silenced Evje, 8-0. At No. 4 singles, it was Guerra defeating Sangmo 8-0, and Pratt's Megan Basaldua downed Enriquez 8-0 at No. 5. Finally, the Cannoneers' Stefanie Reynolds record an 8-0 win over Gabriele Burkoth de Andrad at No. 6 singles.
The Knights will return to action on Tuesday evening, as Berkeley will take to the road to battle St. Joseph's College of Long Island. Start-time for that match is scheduled for 5:00pm.
