Women's tennis team clinches HVIAC regular season title with 9-0 victory over New Rochelle

The Berkeley College women's tennis team solidified the No. 1 seed in the upcoming 2015 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament as the Knights silenced the Blue Angels of the College of New Rochelle by a score of 9-0 in a match played at Beckwith Pointe in New Rochelle, NY. With the win, the Knights improved their record on the year to 5-1 overall, and 3-0 in conference competition, while the Blue Angels dipped to 1-7, and 1-2 in conference play. The Knights now know that they will be the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, and will host No. 4-seeded Vaughn College in the tourney's semifinal round match on Thursday, October 29.

The Knights' victory over the Blue Angels was dominating, and it started during doubles play when Berkeley recorded wins as the No's 1 and 2 flights, while also capturing the third doubles flight by default. At the No. 1 doubles flight, Berkeley's pair of Ceren Aksoy and Maria Avila turned back New Rochelle's duo of Nancy Varughese and Samantha Gomez by a score of 8-0. It was also the Knights' team of Polina Borisova and Susan Wong edging the Blue Angels' combination of Marie Gomez and Iyesogie Aghahowa by a score of 8-6.

When play switched over to singles, the Knights captured the first five singles flights, and picked up a win at No. 6 by default. At No. 1 singles, Avila silenced Varughese by a score of 10-2, and it was Aksoy beating Samantha Gomez 10-0 at No. 2. No. 3 flight singles featured Berkeley's Mikalsen-Sandstad claiming victory over Marie Gomez, 10-2, and Wong downed Aghahowa 10-1 at No. 4 singles. Finally – at No. 5 – it was Sasha Kadyakina defeating Vindhiva Persaud, 10-0. Following the match, Knights Head Coach David Eddy spoke.

"Prior to the season, there were a number of goals that we wanted to accomplish, and winning the HVIAC regular season crown was one of them," Eddy said. "We still have eight days until the tournament begins, and we'll have some tough matches before that, but I feel this group is extremely confident right now. The women have been dedicated and consistent, and because of that, they've had positive results."

Berkeley College will return to action on Saturday, as the Knights will take to the road to battle Penn State Brandywine. Start-time for that match is scheduled for 2:00pm.
