Women's tennis team puts forth hearty effort, but falls to Vaughn College 6-3 in conference action

The Berkeley College women's tennis team dropped a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on Saturday evening, falling to the Warriors of Vaughn College by a score of 6-3 in a contest played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. With the defeat, the Knights are now 0-4 on the 2017 campaign (0-1 HVIAC), while Vaughn College improved to 2-1 overall (2-3 league play).

In a very competitive No. 1 doubles flight, the Knights' combination of Fanny Harling and Kyle Cruz defeated the Warriors' due of Maia Rivers and Emily German by a score of 8-5. Vaughn College captured No. 2 doubles, as Christina DeLuca and Grace Davis silenced Berkeley's Aileen Garcia and Veruzca Scavo by a score of 8-1, and the Warriors won the No. 3 doubles flight by default.

When play switched over to singles, Vaughn College recorded wins in four of the six singles flights to account for the 6-3 final score. The Warriors notched a 10-0 triumph at No. 2 singles, with German defeating Garcia. Vaughn College's DeLuca turned back Scavo at No. 3, 10-2, and the Warriors won the No's 5 and 6 singles flights by default. The Knights' two singles wins came at No's 1 and 4. Harling dominated Rivers at No. 1, defeating her by a score of 10-1, and it was Cruz outlasting Davis at No. 4, 10-6.

The Knights will look to bounce back Sunday afternoon, as Berkeley College will take on the College of New Rochelle in another Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest. The match will take place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, and start-time is scheduled for 2:00pm.
