Women's tennis team shutout by Cannoneers 9-0 in season-opening contest at Pratt ARC

The Berkeley College women's tennis team opened its 2018 campaign with a loss on Thursday evening, falling to the Cannoneers of Pratt Institute in a CUNYAC match by a score of 9-0 at the ARC Arena. The Knights are 0-1 on the 2018 season (0-1 HVIAC), and Pratt Institute improved to 7-2 (2-0 HVIAC).

The Cannoneers raced out to a commanding 3-0 in the match, winning all three doubles flights. At No. 1, it was Pratt Institute's combination of Amanda Twu and Melanie Kania defeating the Knights' pair of Joyce Lewis and Josolin Fults 8-0. The Cannoneers' Amy Young and Caroline Madden recorded an 8-0 triumph over Berkeley's Zahra Sajid and Hezou Tchendi at No. 2. Pratt Institute won the No. 3 flight by default.

When play switched over to singles, the Cannoneers captured all six flights to account for the 9-0 final score. Kania (No. 1), Maia Schlussel (No. 2), Madden (No.3), and Morgan Ferweda (No. 4) all recorded 10-0 victories for Pratt Institute against Lewis (No.1), Boyd (No. 2), Tchendi (No. 3), and Fults (No. 4), respectively. The Cannoneers won the No's 5 and 6 flights by default.

The Knights will return to action on Sunday, as the team will play its home-opener against Misericordia. The match will take place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Start-time is scheduled for 2:00pm.
