Men's basketball team turns on Jets late, races past New Hampshire Technical Institute 86-71 to improve to 20-0 on the year; Historic winning streak now at 44 games

The Berkeley College men's basketball team made it a perfect 20-0 on the 2016-2017 season, and extended its program winning streak to 44 games, as the Knights pulled away from the Lynx late, defeating New Hampshire Technical Institute by a score of 86-71 in a game played at the Wellness Center on the campus of the College of New Rochelle. With the loss, the Lynx fell to 16-9 on the year.

It was the second time the Knights have beaten the Lynx this season, as Berkeley College turned back New Hampshire Technical Institute by a score of 81-70 back on January 8, 2017 on day two of the NHTI Holiday Inn New Year's Classic in New Hampshire.

The Knights started slow out of the gate in this one, trailing 7-1 in the opening 75 seconds of play – and later finding themselves down by a score of 25-19 with 8:39 remaining in the opening session. A 10-3 Knights run over a span of 2:12 put Berkeley ahead by a score of 29-28, though, and the Knights eventually took a one point lead into the locker room at the half (39-38).

In the second session, the game was tied at 43 apiece before the Knights took the lead with 16:20 remaining in the game on an emphatic dunk by Johnnie Green. That was the start of a 10-1 Berkeley College run that catapulted the Knights to a 53-44 lead. Berkeley would go up by as many as 19 points before eventually winning the contest by 15.

Stephon Jennings paced Berkeley College in its victory, as he posted team-highs of 20 points and 12 rebounds. He also added three steals. Additionally, Paul Johnson scored 14 points, snatched three rebounds and contributed two steals, and Massiah Merritt, Dondre Simmons, and Ricardo Ayuso had 11 points apiece for the Knights.

Both teams shot very well from the floor, with the Knights converting on 47.7 percent of their attempts from the field (31-65) compared to 44.1 percent for New Hampshire Technical Institute (26-59). Berkeley dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Lynx 47-33, and the Knights also won the turnover battle, committing 22 miscues while forcing 27 opposition mistakes. Both squads struggled mightily at the line, as New Hampshire Technical Institute missed 10 free throws (12-22), while the Knights missed 16 (18-34).

Despite the loss for Lynx, Dante Ramos posted team-highs of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Alex Cohen added 13 points, a pair of rebounds and two steals, and Zaryn Green contributed 10 points.

Berkeley College will have two days off before returning to action on Wednesday evening as the Knights will take on The King's College (NY) in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game. Start-time is at 8:00pm, and the contest will take place at the Wellness Center on the campus of the College of New Rochelle.
