Berkeley College (NJ) Men's Soccer team scores barrage of goals, downing Bryn Athyn 9-1 to solidify first win of 2014 season

The Berkeley College (NJ) Men's Soccer team picked up its first victory of the 2014 season in a big way, defeating the Lions of Bryn Athyn by a score of 9-1 on the road Sunday afternoon.

The convincing win was gratifying for the Knights, who began the season by previously dropping three close games. Berkeley opened the scoring just 5:16 into the game, when standout Kevin Ortiz scored an unassisted goal to give his squad a 1-0 lead. The Lions' Siafa Dempster notched a goal a little less than 10 minutes later to tie the game at one apiece.

The remainder of the opening stanza – and the contest – belonged to Berkeley. At the 25:42 mark of the first half, Kevin Ortiz received a beautiful pass from Bryan Costa before burying the ball into the back of net. It was Ortiz' second goal of the game, and it gave the Knights a 2-1 lead. A little less than five minutes later, Issa Musalaev scored a goal to increase Berkeley's edge to two goals at 3-1. Tallies by Pedro Dos Santos (at 35:37) and Carlos Gutierrez (at 42:35) upped the Knights' lead to 5-1, an advantage Berkeley held at the half.

Berkeley College continued to pad its lead in the second stanza. Kevin Ortiz added another goal – his third of the afternoon – at 67:57. Juan Faciolince, Eduardo Reyes and Ribhe Huzien all added scores for Berkeley from there, as the Knights cruised to a convincing 9-1 win.

Ortiz set the pace for Berkeley offensively, as he finished the game with three goals. Other than Ortiz, six different players contributed a goal for Berkeley in what was a balanced performance for the Knights as a team.

The Knights will return to action on Tuesday afternoon as Berkeley will take to the road for a game against the Briarcliffe College. Start time is scheduled for 4:00pm.
