The Berkeley College New York men's soccer team picked up a tremendous victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Kangaroos of SUNY Canton by a score of 1-0 in a match played in Canton, NY. With the win, the Knights improved their record on the season to 3-3, while the Kangaroos dipped to 3-5-1. Following the impressive triumph, proud Head Coach Stavros Zomopoulos gave his thoughts.
"This was a signature victory for our club this afternoon, and the first time that we've ever won at SUNY Canton," Zomopoulos said. "We showed diligence and determination today, and it paid off for us. Now it's just a matter of continuing to improve as we prepare for the stretch run of our 2017 season."
What a difference a year makes for Berkeley College. Back in 2016, the Knights were walloped 8-0 by the Kangaroos in Canton, NY. This season, Jovani Guzman's goal in the 33rd minute proved to be the difference, as the lone score would prove to be the only goal of the match. On that tally, Guzman found Omario Rosen in the midfield as he delivered a beautiful pass to Meshema Charles. As SUNY Canton's goaltender came sprinting towards the ball, Charles tapped the ball inside the left post to give the Knights a 1-0 edge.
The Kangaroos did have an opportunity to knot the game at a goal apiece with 26:30 remaining in regulation, but SUNY Canton's Ellis Sanchez blasted a shot over the crossbar to keep the game 1-0 in favor of Berkeley.
In a game that was all defense on both sides, the Knights recorded just 12 shots on the evening (eight on goal), while the Kangaroos were held to just seven shots by the Berkeley College defense (two on goal). SUNY Canton earned three corner kick chances compared to two for the Knights, and Berkeley was whistled for 16 fouls, while the Kangaroos committed eight.
Osvin Videz-Vasquez recorded two saves on the evening in a winning effort, while his counterpart Mouhammed Thiam turned asive seven shots in a losing cause.
The Knights will look to make it three victories in a row on Wednesday evening, as Berkeley College takes to the road to battle The King's College (NY) in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest. Start-time is scheduled for 8:00pm.
