Challenging week for Knights as Berkeley drops matches to Fisher and Five Towns College

The Berkeley College men's soccer team hit a rough patch this week, dropping a pair of matches to Fisher College 3-2 (10/11) and HVIAC foe Five Towns College 5-0 (10/14). With that pair of defeats, the Knights slipped to 11-3 on the 2023 campaign. The Falcons, with Wednesday's victory, improved to 10-2-2 on the year, and the Sound improved to 4-2 (2-0 HVIAC) with its triumph.

Wednesday's match against Fisher was held at Frank D. Zaccaria Memorial Park in Woodland Park, NJ. Things looked promising for Berkeley College through the opening 63 minutes, but a late push by the Falcons turned out to be the difference in the outcome.

The Knights took a 1-0 edge when offensive standout Suad Lukovic redirected Ian Pallardel's pass into the net in the 23rd minute. That would be the lone goal scored in the opening session. Berkeley later tacked on a goal in the 49th minute when Lucas Zuleta found the back of the net to give the Knights a 2-0 advantage.

In the 61st minute, Knights netminder Victor Batista, who has put together a stellar campaign for Berkeley, received a red card, and he was relieved by Dennis Belch. The Falcons wasted no time testing Belch, as Fisher's Leonardo Di Biase scored on a free kick to slice the visitors' deficit to 2-1. A quick hook for Belch followed, with Jose Hurtado came in with the task of protecting a one goal edge in the final 27 minutes.

With 13 minutes remaining in the game, Drake Hampton scored an unassisted goal to square the match at two goals apiece. Fisher later scored the game-winning goal inside the final minute, when Di Biase scored his second goal of the contest, as she cashed in on a penalty kick to give his team the victory.

This past Saturday, in a rematch of last year's competitive HVIAC contest played between the Knights and the Sound, Five Towns College would earn a small bit of redemption, shutting out Berkeley by a score of 5-0. With that, the Sound earned the No. 1 seed in the 2023 HVIAC Tournament, and will take on No. 4 seed SUNY-ESF in the semifinals on Saturday, November 4. Berkeley is now locked into the No. 2 slot, and will play No. 3 Word of Life on the same day.

Berkeley's next regular season match will take place on Tuesday, as the Knights will host Central Penn at Frank D. Zaccaria Memorial Park in Woodland Park, NJ. Start-time is scheduled for 3:00pm.
