Berkeley College men's tennis team plays first match in program history, falling to the Steels of CIA, 6-3 this past Saturday

The Berkeley College New York men's tennis team played its first match in program history this past Saturday afternoon, falling to the Steels of Culinary Institute of America by a score of 6-3 in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match played at Bard College in Annadale-on-Hudson, NY. The match served as the season-opener for both clubs, and featured many exciting sets.

In doubles competition, the Knights dropped a hard-fought No. 1 set, as CIA's Jeremy Sawyer and Jonghee Lee outlasted Berkeley's Herder Pisco and Joe Nguyen, 8-8 (3-7 tiebreaker). The Steels also solidified a win at No. 3 doubles, as CIA's combination of Zach Bryant and Shane Medwinter defeated the Knights' Chubak Ulan and Renzo Loaiza 8-3. Berkeley's lone victory in doubles competition came in thrilling fashion, as the Knights' duo of Omar Durrani and Maxim Klimov turned-back the Steels' Scott Schuett and Brynne Schlicher, 8-6.

When play switched over to singles, Culinary Institute of America captured four of the six singles sets to account for the 6-3 final score. The Steels recorded singles wins at No. 1 (Sawyer over Durrani, 10-3), No. 4 (Schlicher over Klimov, 10-4), No. 5 (Medwinter over Ulan, 10-0), and No. 6 (Bryant over Johan Hildingsson, 10-2). Berkeley's singles victories came at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. No. 2 singles featured Nguyen defeating Lee, 10-8, and No. 3 saw Pisco down Schuett, 10-3. Following the match, Berkeley College Head Coach David Eddy gave his thoughts.

"First and foremost, I'd like to say that it is an honor for me to be the Head Coach of the first Berkeley College men's tennis team in the program's history," Eddy said. "Additionally, the student-athletes are equally as excited as I am to be able to be a part of a team that can evolve into something very special over time. The kids played with a lot of heart today, and hopefully they will continue to eclipse their efforts with each passing match."

Berkeley College will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as the team travels to Brooklyn, N Y to battle the Cannoneers of Pratt Institute in another Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 12:00pm.
