Knights put forth valiant effort in 6-3 loss to Pratt Institute in Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest

The Berkeley College New York men's tennis team finalized its Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular season portion of the schedule on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Cannoneers of Pratt Institute by a score of 6-3 in a match played in Brooklyn, NY. With the victory, Pratt improved to 6-6 on the 2015 campaign (5-0 HVIAC), while the Knights dipped to 3-4 (2-3 HVIAC).

The Cannoneers captured two of the three doubles flights to jump out in front. At the top flight, Pratt Institute's combination of Sergio Yarritu and Eli Eskenazi turned back Berkeley's pair of Herder Pisco and Thinh Nguyen 8-1. At the No. 2 flight, it was the Knights'duo of Chubak Ulan and Alexander Maurmom falling to Pratt's Nick Minichiello and Shane Davis 8-3. Berkeley did record a victory at No. 3 doubles, as Omar Durrani and Sebastien Rousseau stopped the Cannoneers' Joshua Morgan and Haotian Zhang by a score of 8-4.

When play switched over to singles, Pratt Institute won four of the six singles sets to account for the 6-3 final score. At the No. 1 flight, Yarritu won convincingly over Nguyen by a score of 10-1. One spot down, it was Eskenazi silencing Durrani 10-3 at No. 2 singles. In a hard-fought contest at No. 3, it was Minichiello outlasting Pisco by a score of 10-7, and Morgan inched by Maurmom 11-10 (7-3) at No. 4 singles. Berkeley's two singles triumphs came at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, where Rousseau defeated Davis 10-2 and Ulan turned back Zhang 10-6, respectively. Following the loss, Knights Head Coach David Eddy gave his thoughts.

"Pratt Institute's tennis program has been phenomenal over the past three seasons," Eddy said. "They are the two-time defending conference champions, and with that said, I feel as though we did a solid job of giving them a run for their money today. Our confidence as a team continues to grow, and we're looking forward to continuing to progress with each passing match."

The Knights will look to bounce back on Sunday morning, as Berkeley will battle Lehman College in a non-conference match. Start time for that contest at the APEX Tennis Courts in the Bronx will begin at 11:00am.
