Women's basketball team uses balanced effort to decimate Vaughn College, 83-21 Wednesday evening; Five Knights score in double figures

The Berkeley College women's basketball team picked up an easy victory on Wednesday evening, silencing Vaughn College by a score of 83-21 in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest. The game took place at the Borough of Manhattan Community College in Lower Manhattan. With the victory, the Knights evened their record at 4-4, and stayed perfect in conference competition (2-0), while the Warriors slipped to 3-5 on the 2019-2020 campaign (1-2 HVIAC).

The Knights defense continued to be a bright spot, as with tonight's stellar effort, Berkeley is allowing just 56.4 points per evening, and just 36.4 points per night in HVIAC games.

Berkeley led tonight's game by 35 points at the break, and 56 after three quarters, before eventually outscoring Vaughn 15-9 in the final period to account for the 62-point triumph.

Five players scored in double figures for Berkeley, including Sabriana Franck, as she led all scorers with 20 points on the evening. She also snatched eight rebounds, registered four steals, and added three assists. Amirah Greene connected on four three-point baskets, and seven of her 14 shot attempts overall, to finish with 19 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, and six steals, and veteran Ebony Lofton posted a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Kaina Martinez narrowly missed a tripled-double, as she finished with 11 points, 11 steals, nine assists, and three swatted shots, and finally, it was Daniella Wood finalizing her evening by netting 10 points and snatching eight caroms.

Despite the loss for the Warriors, Joleen Gomez scored a team-high 12 points for Vaughn, while also snatching three rebounds.

The Knights dominated in practically every facet of this one. Berkeley converted on 37.2 percent of its shots (35-94) while holding the Warriors to just seven baskets (7-47, 14.9 percent from the floor). Berkeley outrebounded Vaughn 65-43, while also winning the turnover battle, committing just 18 on the evening while forcing 44 Warriors mistakes. The Knights were able to swing the ball well, recording 24 assists on the night, compared to just five for the opposition.

Berkeley will now enjoy the rest of calendar year 2019 off before returning to action on January 4. On that day, the Knights will take on the University of Maine-Augusta at 12:00pm (neutral site). The following day, January 5, Berkeley will tussle with NHTI (11:00am).
