Yeshiva University shoots 50.9 percent from the floor (29-57) to defeat Knights 75-63, end Berkeley's three-game winning streak

The Berkeley College women's basketball team's winning streak is over at three games, as the Knights last night were defeated by the Maccabees of Yeshiva University by a score of 75-63. The contest took place at the Nat Holman Gymnasium on the campus of the City College of New York. With the loss, Berkeley slipped to 7-6 on the 2019-2020 campaign, while the Maccabees improved to a mark of 6-12.

Despite the loss for Berkeley, the Knights were paced by Jennifer Lightner, as she scored a team-high 16 points. She also tied for the game-high of five steals, while snatching three rebounds and adding a pair of dimes. Brittany Mitchell posted a double-double with 13 points, 10 boards, and five steals, and Sabriana Franck contributed 11 points, four rebounds, and a team-high three assists, and veteran Ebony Lofton scored 10 points while grabbing nine rebounds.

Leading the way for the Yeshiva University in its victory was Tehilla Teigman, as she was sensational on the evening, registering a double-double with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Yuval Nitzan added 14 points, nine assists, five rebounds, and four steals. Finally, it was Adina Rosenberg scoring 11 points, grabbing four rebounds, and registering a pair of dimes.

After jumping ahead 3-0, Yeshiva University ran off 12 consecutive points to snatch the lead for good. Nitzan began the rally by connecting on a three-point basket, and Teigman capped the impressive run with a converted layup. The Maccabees led by a score of 24-14 following one quarter of action.

The Maccabees' momentum carried into the second quarter, as Yeshiva scored the stanza's first 10 points to catapult ahead by a score of 34-14. Elizabeth Pavel began Yeshiva's strong spurt with a converted basket in the paint, and Teigman converted on a pair of layups to highlight the run. Later in the second quarter, Chana Boltax connected a three-pointer to put the Maccabees up 21, 37-16, with 5:27 remaining in the half. Berkeley College would refuse to quit, however, finishing the half on a 10-2 run to pull to within 13 (39-26) as the teams entered the locker room at halftime.

Berkeley continued to chip away at Yeshiva University's lead in the early stages of the third quarter, as Mitchell would drain a triple to bring the Knights to within eight points, 44-36, with 7:00 remaining in the session. The Knights managed to pull to within seven, but Yeshiva would answer with nine straight points, highlighted by pair of converted jumpers from Rosenberg, to take a commanding 57-41 edge with 1:51 to go in the third. The Maccabees owned a 59-43 advantage following 30 minutes of action.

The Maccabees built their lead back up to 21 in the fourth quarter (73-52), before eventually winning the contest by 12.

Yeshiva University was locked in this evening, drilling 29 of its 57 shot attempts (50.9 percent). On the flip side, Berkeley struggled, misfiring on 50 attempts (26-76, 34.2 percent). The Maccabees dominated on the glass, snatching 53 rebounds compared to 38 for the Knights. Yeshiva registered 20 assists, while Berkeley accumulated eight, and the Maccabees won the game despite committing a whopping 36 turnovers, while the Knights had 22 miscues.

Berkeley will return to action on Saturday afternoon, as the Knights will take to the road to battle Central Penn. The game will serve as the regular season finale for the Knights, and start-time is scheduled for 2:00pm.
