Knights shoot just 27.8 percent (15-54), commit 24 turnovers in 56-43 defeat to Central Penn in regular season finale

The Berkeley College women's basketball team dropped its regular season finale on Saturday afternoon, falling to Central Penn by a score of 56-43. The contest took place at East Pennsboro Area High School in Enola, PA. With the defeat, Berkeley slipped to 7-7 on the year, while Central Penn improved to an impressive mark of 11-2.

Despite the loss for Berkeley, Jennifer Lightner led the way for her team, scoring a team-high 17 points while tying for the game-high of four steals.  She also grabbed three rebounds and registered a pair of dimes. Daniella Wood netted 13 points while grabbing four rebounds, and Lalibela Rigaud finalized her afternoon with nine points and eight rebounds. Veteran Ebony Lofton snatched a team-high 10 rebounds for Berkeley.

Tahniyaah Jackson was sensational for Central Penn this afternoon, scoring a game-high 28 points while grabbing 13 rebounds. She also added three assists, while collecting three steals. Ja'Lynn Burton-Jones posted a double-double with 11 points, 18 rebounds, three assists, and three steals, and it was Jahrae Patterson finishing just short of a double-double, as she scored 13 points while snatching nine rebounds.

Central Penn raced out to an 8-2 advantage in the opening 4:14 of action, but an 8-0 run by Berkeley, capped by a converted three-point basket by Wood, tied the game at eight apiece with 3:48 remaining in the opening quarter. Central Penn answered with an 8-0 spurt of its own to close the quarter, taking a 16-8 edge after 10 minutes of action.

After falling behind by as many as 14 points in the second quarter, and trailing by 12 at the half (31-19), Berkeley pulled to within six (33-27) when Lightner drilled a three-point basket with 3:57 left in a very low-scoring third quarter. Both teams struggled mightily in the period, as the squads combined for just five converted field goals and 14 points. Berkeley won the quarter, 8-6, but connected on just three of 13 attempts from the floor (23.1 percent). On the flip side, Central Penn connected on just two of its 19 shot attempts from the hardwood (10.5 percent), and converted on only two out of eight shots from the charity stripe. After three, Central Penn led 37-27.

Berkeley kept it close for the opening 3:37 of the final quarter, trailing just 41-33. Central Penn would re-take a double digit advantage (43-33) when Patterson would connect on a layup with 5:31 to go. For the remainder of the contest, Central Penn owned a double digit lead eventually winning the game by 13.  

Both teams struggled shooting the basketball, with Berkeley connecting on just 15 of 54 attempts from the field (27.8 percent), and Central Penn drilling 31.2 percent of its shots (24-77). Central Penn held commanding leads in the rebounding category (59-38) as well as the assists column (15-8). Berkeley committed 24 miscues on the afternoon, while Central Penn turned the ball over 16 times. Central Penn also dominated in the paint, netting 36 points there compared to 14 for Berkeley.

The Knights will now have six days off before returning to action on Saturday, February 15, as Berkeley will enter the 2019-2020 HVIAC Women's Basketball Tournament as the No. 1 seed, and will face No. 4 seeded Vaughn College. The semifinal round contest will take place at Five Towns College in Dix Hills, NY, with a start-time of 1:00pm.
