
The Berkeley College women's basketball team split a pair of games in recent days, falling to the Pioneers of Point Park by a score of 94-49 in Pittsburgh, PA, before turning around the following day and downing the Nittany Lions of Penn State Shenango, 71-65. With that output, the Knights are now 2-2 on the 2024-2025 campaign.
Despite the Knights' loss to Point Park, Khya Hough scored a game-high 18 points to go along with four rebounds. Ariella Johnson contributed 14 points, five rebounds, and a game-high four assists, and Magan Jackson netted 12 points and tied for the game-high of six rebounds.
Pacing the Pioneers was Camille Fultz, as she connected on eight of her 12 attempts from the floor, finishing with a team-high 17 points to go along with 11 rebounds and three assists. Aichata Ballo put forth a sensational all-around performance with 15 points, a game-high eight assists, seven rebounds, and two steals, and Ari Bleda posted a double-double with 13 points, 12 boards, and three helpers. Finally, it was Isabella Pelaia finalizing her evening with 11 points, six rebounds, three steals, and two assists.
After going to the locker room with a 44-34 advantage, the Pioneers ballooned the lead to as many as 45 late in the fourth quarter. Point Park dominated the second half of action, outscoring Berkeley 28-7 in the third quarter and 22-8 in the fourth quarter.
Point Park shot 45.9 percent from the floor (34-74), connecting on 13 of its 35 attempts from downtown in the process. The Knights converted on just 20 attempts for the evening (20-71, 28.2 percent), and the Pioneers held a dominant 58-33 edge on the glass for the night. Point Park assisted on 27 of 34 shots, while Berkeley registered a dime on 10 of 20 shots. The Knights down the turnover battle, committing just 15 miscues, while the hosts finalized their evening with 16.
In the Knights' six-point win over Penn State Shenango, Hough led all players with 23 points and five steals. She also tied for the game-high of three assists, as well. Jackson scored 19 points, collected a team-best nine rebounds, and added five steals, and Johnson finished with 12 points, five boards, four steals, three assists, and a pair of blocked shots.
The Nittany Lions were led by Shar'Da Williamson, as she scored a team-high 20 points (4-4 FT) while leading all players with 17 rebounds, including five on the offensive glass. Jaysine Sellers added 10 points and three boards, and Hailee Aguinaga pulled down 16 boards (five offensive).
Berkeley College registered a strong first half, leading for 18:49 of the 20 minutes played. The Knights trailed briefly just twice (7-6 and 9-8), and Berkeley gradually built up its lead in the second quarter, eventually taking its largest advantage of the session, 41-29, into the locker room at halftime.
In the third, the Knights led 49-35 before rattling off six consecutive points, courtesy of a basket apiece by Aliyah Smith, Maria Negron, and Johnson, to put Berkeley ahead by 20 (55-35). A 10-1 run by Penn State Shenango over the final 5:03 of the quarter pulled the Nittany Lions to within 11 (56-45) after three.
Penn State Shenango drew to within seven, 57-50, with just over eight minutes remaining, but a huge three-point conversion by Hough put the Knights back up 10 (60-50). The Nittany Lions refused to go quietly, going on a 13-6 run to draw to within three, 66-63, with 39 seconds left, but Hough would convert on a pair of free throws 29 seconds later to put the Knights ahead 68-63. Berkeley would eventually hold on to win the contest, 71-65.
The Knights were far more efficient shooting the basketball, converting on 39.2 percent of their shots from the floor (29-74) compared to a 27.4 percent conversion rate for Penn State Shenango (23-84). The Nittany Lions did dominate the glass, snatching 55 rebounds compared to 38 for Berkeley, but the Knights won the turnover battle convincingly, committing just 17 miscues, while the hosts piled 28. Each team had 10 assists on the night.
Berkeley will return to action on Sunday afternoon, as the Knights will travel to Baruch College's ARC Arena to battle Yeshiva University. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 2:00pm.
