Berkeley College women's tennis team drops conference match to New Rochelle, 8-1

The Berkeley College New York women's tennis team dropped a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on Friday afternoon, falling to the Blue Angels of the College of New Rochelle by a score of 8-1 in New Rochelle, NY. With the win, the Blue Angels picked up their first victory of 2014 campaign, improving to 1-4 (1-0 in conference competition). With the loss, Berkeley dipped to 0-2 overall (and 0-2 in HVIAC play).

The College of New Rochelle took control of the match early, winning all three doubles sets. In a hard-fought No. 1 doubles set, the College of New Rochelle's pair of Deanna Tozzo and Marie Gomez defeated Berkeley's Victoria Standstad and Sasha Kadyakina, 7-6. The Blue Angels' Nancy Varughese and Kayla Banwarie turned back the Knights' pair of Marie Evje and Kristina Krutina at No. 2 doubles, 8-4, and at No. 3 doubles, New Rochelle's combination of Jewel Davis and Kelly Ball outlasted Berkeley College's team of Jigme Sangmo and Gabrielle Burkoth, 8-4

When play switch to singles, the Berkeley College Knights picked up their first set victory in program history when at No. 4 singles, Kristina Krutina defeated the Blue Angels' Kyanna Bertrand by a score of 10-2. In other singles sets, Tozzo downed Sandstad 10-5 at No. 1, and Varughese beat Kadyakina 10-3 at No. 2 singles. No. 3 saw Banwarie defeat Evje, 10-3, and New Rochelle's Jamilla Smith beat Sangmo 10-4 at No. 5. Finally, at No. 6 singles, the Blue Angels' Kendra Michel downed Burkoth, 10-3.

The Knights will now have five days off before returning to action on Thursday, October 10, when Berkeley will take to the road to battle the Vaughn College Warriors in another Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match. Start-time is scheduled for 5:00pm.
