Women's Tennis team nails-down first victory as a varsity program, defeating Vaughn College 7-2 Thursday evening

It was a historic evening for the Berkeley College women's tennis team, as the Knights picked up their first victory as a program on Thursday night, turning back the Warriors of Vaughn College 7-2 in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match. With the win, Berkeley improved to 1-2 on the 2014 campaign (1-2 HVIAC), while Vaughn is still searching for its first win at 0-3 (0-2 HVIAC).

Berkeley College put itself in a great position to win early, as the Knights captured two out of the three doubles sets. At No. 1 doubles, the combination of Victoria Mikalsen-Sandstad and Rheana Kaula turned back Vaughn College's duo of Maia Rivers and Mellisa Jastillana by a score of 8-4. The Knights also were victorious at No. 3 singles, as Khristina Krutina and Jigme Sangmo silenced the Warriors' Alexus Butler and Katherine Guerrero, 8-2. Vaughn's lone victory in doubles competition came at No. 2, when in a hard-fought set, the Warriors' pair of Lacyrose Dickinson and Angela Gomez outlasted Berkeley's Alexandra Kadyakin and Marie Evje, 8-6.

When play switched over to singles, the Knights captured five of those six sets to account for the 7-2 final score. Mikalsen-Sandstad downed Rivers 10-6 at No. 1, and Kaula downed Jastillana 10-1 at No. 2. Berkeley also picked up wins at No. 4 (Evje over Guerrero, 10-4), No. 5 (Krutina over Dickinson, 10-6), and No. 6 (Sangmo over Zoyla Martinez, 10-1). The Warriors' lone triumph during singles play was at No. 3, when Gomez squeaked by Kadyakin, 10-9.

The Knights will look to build momentum following their first win as a program when the team heads to Staten Island for a Columbus Day non-conference matinee match with the Dolphins. Start-time for that contest is scheduled for 1:00pm.
