New York women's tennis team drops Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match to Bears, 7-2

The Berkeley College New York women's tennis team dropped a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on Thursday evening, as the Knights fell to the Bears of St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn by a score of 7-2 at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY. With the win, the Bears improved to 3-6 on the 2014 campaign, and 2-1 in conference competition, while Berkeley fell to 1-4 on the year (1-3 in HVIAC play).

St. Joseph's College took control of the match in the early stages, winning all three doubles sets to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the match. At No. 1 doubles, it was the Bears' combination of Tathiana Pierre and Victoria LoBosco defeating the Knights' pair of Victoria Mikalsen-Sandstad and Rheana Kaula by a score of 8-3. No. 2 doubles saw St. Joseph's team of Samantha Rossi and Mary Edward silence Berkeley's Marie Evje and Alexandra Kadyakina 8-0, and finally it was the Bears' Madeline Moravek and Deirdre Lavelle shutting out the Knights' paiiring of Jigme Sangmo and Gabriele Burkoth de Andrad, 8-0.

When play switched to singles, St. Joseph' won four of the six sets to account for the 7-2 final score. The Bears picked up singles victories at the No. 1 flight (Pierre over Kaula, 10-3), No. 3 flight (LoBosco over Evje 10-1), No. 5 flight (Moravek over Sangmo, 10-0), and No. 6 flight (Lavelle over Burkoth de Andrad, 10-2). Berkeley College did pick up a pair of hard-fought singles wins, as Mikalsen-Sandstad outlasted Rossi at No. 2 singles, 10-7, and Kadyakina defeated Edward, 10-8 at No. 4 singles.

The Knights will have eight days off before returning to action on Saturday, October 25, as Berkeley College will compete at the 2014 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships. For more information on that event, keep it posted to www.berkeleycollegeknights.com.
