New York women's tennis team takes fourth place at 2014 HVIAC Women's Tennis championship

The Berkeley College New York women's tennis team competed in the 2014 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship Saturday on a beautiful, sunny, and warm day at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The Knights accounted for two team points on the day, and finished in fourth place for the tournament.

Pratt Institute won the conference title for the fourth consecutive season, sweeping all six singles flights and all three doubles to collect a perfect 27 points, which marked the first time in their four-year run as champions that they've accomplished that.

Despite falling short in their bid for a conference crown, Berkeley College did pick up a few points thanks to Victoria Mikalsen-Sandstad's victory over Vaughn College's Melissa Jastillana in the quarterfinal round of the No. 2 singles flight tournament. Additionally, the Knights picked up a team point at the No. 1 doubles flight tournament, as Berkeley's duo of Mikalsen-Sandstad and Rheana Kaula turned back Maia Rivers and Angela Gomez.

Following the day's action, Knights Head Coach David Eddy gave his thoughts on his student-athletes completing their first season as a varsity program.

"Today, the overall progress of all six players showed, and there is a lot to be said for that," Eddy said. "It has been fun to be on the court coaching once again - especially this group of student-athletes. They got along really well and enjoyed being teammates. They listened to my advice and continued to improve themselves. I feel honored to be part of the first women's tennis team in Berkeley College history, and I look forward to continuing the progression of the program in 2015."
