Women's tennis team stays unblemished for 2015 with 8-1 victory over St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn

The Berkeley College women's tennis team continued its fast start to the 2015 campaign on Saturday afternoon, as the Knights turned back the Bears of St. Joseph's College by a score of 8-1 in a contest played at the York College Tennis Courts in Jamaica, NY. With the win, Berkeley is now 2-0 on the young season, while the Bears slipped to 2-6 on the year.

The Knights captured two out of the three doubles sets to take control of the match early. At No. 1 set doubles, Berkeley's combination of Maria Avila and Ceren Aksoy turned back St. Joseph's' duo of Mary Edward and Denise Trerotola by a score of 8-2. The Knights also nailed down a win at No. 3 set doubles when Alessandra Lippolis teamed with Susan Wong to turn back the Bears' Katie Wenzler and Kathryn Brucas by a score of 8-2. St. Joseph's won a hard-fought No. 2 doubles set when Princess Baptiste and Tathiana Pierre defeated Berkeley's Victoria Mikalsen-Sandstand and Ekaterine Zharkova by a score of 8-4.

The Knights would dominate once play shifted to singles, as Berkeley captured all six singles contests. Avila silenced Trerotola at No. 1 set singles, 10-1. At No. 2, it was Aksoy beating Pierre, 10-5. Zharkova solved Baptiste, 10-5 at No. 3, and at No. 4 singles it was Mikalsen-Sandstand dominating Edward, 10-1. Wong defeated Brucas 10-2 and Lippolis downed Wenzler 10-1 at No's 5 an 6 set singles, respectively. Following the match, Berkeley College Head Coach David Eddy gave his thoughts.

"The girls came out with a tremendous amount of confidence this afternoon, and that was exemplified in the results," Eddy said. "Right now we're off to a positive start in our quest for success this season, and we'll look to keep the momentum going. I'm very proud of them so far."

The Knights will return to action on Thursday, October 15, as the Knights will travel to Staten Island, NY to battle the CSI Dolphins. Start-time is scheduled for 3:30pm.
