Women's tennis suffers first loss of the season, falling to Staten Island by a score of 7-2 at CSI Tennis Center

The Berkeley College women's tennis team suffered its first loss for the season on Thursday afternoon, falling to the Dolphins of the College of Staten Island by a score of 7-2 in a match played at the CSI Tennis Center in Willowbrook. With the loss, the Knights slipped to 2-1 on the year, while the Dolphins won their fourth consecutive match and improved to 10-3.

The Dolphins set the tone for the match early, capturing all three doubles flights. At No. 1 doubles, Staten Island's duo of Nozima Toshpulatova and Sabrina Bragerton-Nasert recorded an 8-0 victory over Berkeley's pair of Ceren Aksoy and Maria Avila. Staten Island also picked up an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles when Madiha Mulla and Samatha Mazier silenced the Knights' Victoria Mikalsen-Sandstad and Susan Wong. Finally, at the No. 3 doubles flight, the Dolphins' Viktoriya Volkova and Michelle Kushnir turned back Berkeley's Ekaterina Zharkova and Alessandra Lippolis by a score of 8-1.

When play switched over to singles, the Dolphins captured four of the six flights to account for the 7-2 final score. At No. 1 singles, Toshpulatova outlasted Akoy in a hard-fought contest, 6-4, 6-3. No. 2 singles saw Bragerton Nasert silence Avila, 6-0, 6-1. The third flight consisted of Mulla taking on Zharkova, with Mulla coming out victorious 6-2, 6-1. Staten Island also was victorious at the No. 5 singles flight when Mazier pushed past Wong, 7-5, 63. Berkeley College's two victories at singles competition came at No. 4 when Mikalsen-Sandstad outlasted Volkova, 6-2, 5-7, 10-7, and at No. 6 when Lippolis shut down the Dolphins' Guetanie Romain, 6-1, 6-0.

Berkeley College will look to get back on track on Saturday, as the Knights host SUNY Delhi in a match at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Start-time is scheduled for 4:30pm.
