Women's tennis team looks sharp in 7-2 victory over the Broncos of SUNY Delhi; Knights improve to 3-1 on 2015 season

The Berkeley College women's tennis team bounced back from a loss this past Thursday at Staten Island in a big way, as the Knights turned back the Broncos of SUNY Delhi by a score of 7-2 in a match played at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. With the win, Berkeley improved its record to 3-1 on the 2015 campaign, while the Broncos fell to 4-4.

The Knights jumped ahead 2-1 after doubles play. At the No. 1 doubles flight, Berkeley's combination of Ceren Aksoy and Maria Avila defeated SUNY Delhi's team of Chun Y Pan and Monica Benitez by a scoe of 8-3. Berkeley also solidified a victory at the No. 3 doubles flight, as Victoria Mikalsen-Sandstad and Alessandra Lippolis shut down the Broncos' Jessica Drum and Mei Pan, 8-0. SUNY Delhi's one victory at doubles play came at No. 2, where the Broncos' Jenna Bellair and Rani Samudrala defeated the Knights' Ekaterina Zharkova and Susan Wong, 8-3.

When play shifted to singles, Berkeley nailed-down five of the six flights to account for the 7-2 final score. At the No. 1 singles flight, Aksoy shut-down Chun Y Pan, 6-1, 6-0. Also, it was Avila shutting-out Benitez, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and Mikalsen-Sandstad downing Samudrala, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4. Th No. 5 flight featured Lippolis defeating Drum, 6-1, 6-1, and Wong outlasted Mei Pan, 8-4 at No. 6 singles. The Broncos' one victory during singles competition came at No. 3, where Bellair silenced Zharkova, 6-3, 6-2.

Berkeley College will return to action Sunday afternoon, as the Knights will battle Pratt Institute in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match. Start-time is scheduled for 12:00pm.
