Women's tennis team puts forth strong effort in turning back Penn State Brandywine, 8-1; Knights now 6-1 on 2015 campaign

The Berkeley College women's tennis team continued its successful 2015 campaign on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Nittany Lions of Penn State Brandywine by a score of 8-1. With the victory the Knights are now 6-1 on the season while the Nittany Lions dipped to 1-2.

The Knights jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage after capturing all three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, it was Berkeley's combination of Ceren Aksoy and Maria Avila defeating Penn State Brandywine's Heather Gartside and Laura Masse by a score of 8-2. The Knights' Victoria Mikalsen-Sandstad and Susan Wong outlasted the Nittany Lions' Amanda Bradley and Kailin Vollmuth 8-4 at No. 2, and at No. 3 doubles it was Berkeley's duo of Kate Zharkova and Alessandra Lippolis claiming an 8-2 win over Penn State Brandywine's Alexis Eillison and Katie Corey, 8-2.

When play switched over to singles, the Knights captured five of the six singles flights to account for the 8-1 final score. At No. 1 singles, Aksoy defeated Gartside 7-5, 6-0, and Avila shutout Bradley 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2. No. 3 singles saw Zharkova defeat Masse, 6-0, 6-1. At No. 5 singles, it was Wong turning back Ellison, 6-1, 6-1, and Lippolis beat Vollmuth, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6. The lone winner for the Nittany Lions was Corey, who claimed her fourth-flight singles match in three sets over Mikalsen-Sandstad.

Berkeley College will return to action on Tuesday, as the Knights will take on the Lightning of Lehman College at the APEX Tennis Courts. Start-time for that match is scheduled for 3:30pm.
