Women's tennis team powers its way into HVIAC championship match with 5-0 semifinal round victory over Vaughn College

The Berkeley College women's tennis team – in just its second year of existence – is one victory away from securing its first-ever Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title after the No. 1 seeded Knights silenced the No. 4 seeded Warriors of Vaughn College by a score of 5-0 in the semifinals of the 2015 conference tournament. The match was played at Queens College in Flushing, NY. With the victory, the Knights are now 7-1 on the season and will advance to play the No. 2 seeded Cannoneers of Pratt Institute in the championship match at the USTA at 1:00pm on Saturday. Vaughn College finalized its season at 0-8.

The match started with singles competition with the knowledge that if one of the teams captured five of the six singles flights, that squad would be rewarded with an automatic victory. The Knights captured five singles flights in rapid fashion to clinch the match.

At the No. 1 flight, it was Ceren Aksoy defeating Maia Rivers by a score of 10-1. No. 2 singles saw Maria Avila shut-down Angela Gomez 10-2, and Victoria Mikalsen-Sandstad silenced Alexus Butler, 10-0 at the No. 4 flight. No. 5 flight singles featured Alessandra Lippolis defeating Lacy Dickinson, 10-0, and finally it was Susan Wong downing Courtney Scott, 10-0 at No. 6 singles. Following the match, Head Coach David Eddy gave his thoughts.

"What impresses me about these determined student-athletes is the confidence they exude on the court" Eddy said. "They came into this match with high expectations of themselves and took care of business. It's very fitting that the championship match will be against Pratt Institute, as that institution has set the bar high by exemplifying excellence in this conference over the years. We'll have a chance to make our statement on Saturday, and I know we'll be ready."

In just two years of existence, the Knights have done a phenomenal job of stamping their claim as one of the premiere teams in the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. In order to nail-down the institution's first conference crown, Berkeley will need to defeat the four-time defending champion Cannoneers of Pratt Institute.
