Women's tennis team struggles in season opener, falls to Broncos of SUNY Delhi by a score of 7-0

The Berkeley College women's tennis team began its 2016 season on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Broncos of SUNY Delhi by a score of 7-0 in a match played in Delhi, NY.

The Broncos cruised in the two doubles flights, winning at No. 1 singles 8-2 as the combination of Kathleen Lennon and Monica Benitez defeated the Knights' Kate Zharkova and Jen Giroux. No. 2 singles saw SUNY Delhi's duo of Mei Pan and Jenna Bellair silence Berkeley College's Marisol Munoz and Stephanie-Chai Kiu-Tse 8-0.

When play moved over to singles, the Broncos captured the five flights that were played to account for the 7-0 final score. At the No. 1 flight, Lennon downed Zharkova 7-5, 6-1. Benitez shut down Giroux 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2, and No. 3 featured SUNY Delhi's Rani Samudrala turning back Munoz, 6-1, 6-0. The No. 4 flight saw Jenna Blair defeat Kiu-Tse 6-1, 6-0, and finally at No. 5, it was Pan breezing by Ayashaii Vernon, 6-0, 6-0.

The Knights will return to action on Sunday afternoon, as Berkeley College will take on Misericordia at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Start-time for that match is scheduled for 1:00pm.
