Women's tennis team loses conference match to New Rochelle 8-1 at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center

The Berkeley College women's tennis team dropped a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Blue Angels of the College of New Rochelle by a score of 8-1 in a contest played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. With the loss, the Knights dipped to 0-4 on the 2016 season (0-3 HVIAC), while the Blue Angels improved their record to 2-10 (2-1 league play).

New Rochelle took control of the match after doubles play, winning two of three doubles flights. At No. 1, the Blue Angels' combination of Sydney Thompson and Chloe Wang turned back Berkeley College's Kate Zharkova and Jennifer Giroux by a score of 8-3. The Knights picked up a hard-earned victory at No. 2, as Marisol Munoz and Stephanie Kiu-Tse outlasted New Rochelle's Jhosalie Danseco and Natacha Sornsuwit, 7-5. The Blue Angels won the No. 3 doubles flight by default.

When play switched over to singles, New Rochelle captured all six flights to account for the 8-1 final score. At No. 1, Thompson downed Zharkova, 10-2, and it was Wang holding off Munoz, 10-8 at No. 2. No. 3 doubles featured Sornsuwit defeating Giroux 10-3 at No. 4, and it was Danseco finishing off Kiu-Tse, 10-3 at No. 4. The Blue Angels won the No. 5 and No. 6 flights by default.

Berkeley College will return to action on Thursday evening, as the Knights will take on the Cannoneers of Pratt Institute in the semifinal round of the 2016 Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament. The match will be played at the Pratt ARC, with start-time to-be-announced.
