The Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its weekly award winners for the period of Monday, January 18th through Sunday, January 24th, and Berkeley College's men's and women's basketball teams were well represented. On the men's side, newcomer Malachi Faison earned Player of the Week honors, while for the Berkeley women, Amal Mahmoud earned the conference's top billing.
Faison was tabbed men's Player of the Week following his stellar efforts at Clinton College and Johnson & Wales (North Carolina). Against the Clinton Golden Bears, Faison posted a double-double, connecting on nine of his 14 attempts from the floor to finish with 20 points. He also collected 10 boards. A day later against the Johnson & Wales (NC) Wildcats, the standout finished with 16 points (7-9 FG), a game-high five steals, and five rebounds.
The men will return to action this weekend, as they'll play three consecutive days. On Friday, January 27th, the Knights will host Clinton College at CCNY's Nat Holman Gymnasium (8pm). Berkeley will then play at Manor College on Saturday, January 28th (4pm), before finalizing the weekend's slate of games at Culinary Institute of Amerca on Sunday at 1pm.
Mahmoud earned top HVIAC billing on the women's side thanks to her stellar efforts in game against Yeshiva University, Clinton College, and Johnson & Wales (NC). Back on January 19th, in a game against the Maccabees at CCNY's Nat Holman Gymnasium, the senior put forth a tremendous effort, connecting on six of her 13 attempts from the floor, and six of her eight opportunities at the foul line, to finish with a team-high 18 points. She also registered team-highs of 13 rebounds, four steals, and three dimes. Two days later in a game against the Golden Bears, she connected on 10 of her 19 shots from the floor to finish with a team-high 21 points. The sharpshooter also snatched a game-high 18 rebounds, as well. Finally, against Johnson & Wales (NC), Mahmoud scored seven points.
Berkeley's women's squad will return to the court Friday evening, January 27th, as the Knights will host Clinton College at CCNY. Start-time is scheduled for 6:00pm.
