Berkeley continues recent winning ways with road triumphs over Herons, Bobcats

The Berkeley College men's basketball team continued to roll in recent days, improving to a record of 8-1 since January 13 by defeating Great Bay Community College on the road by a score of 79-78 this past Sunday (2/9), before turning around two days later and blowing out Paul Smith's College, 118-89 in Paul Smith's, NY. With that two-game output, the Knights improved to a mark of 13-9 on the 2024-2025 campaign.

In Berkeley College's thrilling win over the Herons, Jesse Taylor connected on eight of his 11 shots from the floor, and seven of his nine free throw opportunities, to tie for the game-high of 26 points. He also snatched four rebounds, as well. DeMarco Watson recorded 15 points, grabbed three rebounds, and swiped three steals, and Julio Wallace and Yasin Abdur-Rashid contributed eight points apiece.

Despite the loss for Great Bay, Theodore Wolf (10-20 FT, 5-6 FT) tied for the game-high of 26 points while leading all players with 13 rebounds. He also dished three assists and swiped two steals, as well. Ethan May contributed 19 points while collecting seven rebounds, adding three dimes, and recording two steals, and Keith Landry finalized his evening with 10 points, a game-high six assists, and four rebounds.

In what was a tightly-contested game through, Berkeley held a slim 37-34 edge at halftime, and the Herons kept things close, outscoring the Knights 44-42 in the second half, but the Knights were able to hold on for yet another close victory.

The teams nearly had identical shooting percentages for the afternoon, with Berkeley earning a conversion rate of 41.7 percent (30-72), while Great Bay Community College attempted and missed just one more shot than the visitors (30-73, 41.1 percent). The Herons held a 42-36 edge on the glass, while also dishing 14 assists to Berkeley's nine. The Knights held a 13-9 advantage in steals, and Berkeley also won the turnover battle, committing just 17 miscues compared to 19 for the hosts.

Berkeley College 118, Paul Smith's College 89

The Knights had six players score in double figures in Berkeley's dominant triumph over the Bobcats, including Abdur-Rashid, as he scored a team-high 19 points while collecting three rebounds, swiping a game-high three steals, and dishing two assists. Ike Sheppard finalized his evening with a double-double, scoring 16 points, pulling down 12 rebounds, and registering two steals. Jerald Campbell netted 14 points while collecting five rebounds (including four offensive). Karif Isaacs contributed 11 points and five rebounds, and Devin Rivera and Julio Wallace added 10 points and three rebounds apiece.

Zion Mifflin put forth a fantastic effort for the Bobcats, scoring a game-high 32 points (7-10 FT) to go along with five rebounds and three assists. Zach Muroff connected on five trifectas, scoring 15 points on the night. Jayden Williams netted 13 points, collected three rebounds, and dished three assists. Miguel Alejandro netted 11 points while snatching a team-high six rebounds, and Savior Arroyo finished with 10 points and four caroms.

Berkeley held a comfortable 58-39 lead after 20 minutes of action, and the Knights continued to add to their lead in the second stanza, lighting up the scoreboard for 61 points while Paul Smith's scored 50. The Knights won the game comfortably, by 30.

The Knights earned a conversion rate of 50 percent for the evening (45-90), while Paul Smith's hit on just 38.8 percent of its attempts from the floor (31-80). Berkeley dominated the glass, snatching 56 rebounds to the Bobcats' 29, and the Knights held significant edges in assists (19-11) and steals (10-5). Both teams took care of the basketball well, with Berkeley committing just 11 miscues on the night, and Paul Smith's finishing with 14 turnovers.

Up next for the Knights: An NACIA clash with Bryant & Stratton-Ohio

Berkeley College will next take to the road to battle Bryant & Stratton-Ohio in another NACIA contest this Saturday. The game will take place at the Sister Diana Stano Athletic Center on the campus of Ursuline College. Start-time is scheduled for 8:00pm.
