Berkeley College New Jersey cross country's Sean Smith honors late father by competing in Father's Day race

The Berkeley College New Jersey cross country team is currently in its third year of existence, and student-athlete Sean Smith - who was one of the Knights' first recruits - ran a Father's Day race to honor his late father back on Sunday, June 21, 2015.

Sean Smith and New Jersey Head Men's Cross Country Coach Michael Lincoln have run the race in Westwood for three straight years. While the two are not father and son, many others who participate are.

Stephen Smith (Sean's father) suffered a heart attack and passed away more than two years ago at the age of 61, right before Sean Smith graduated from Passaic Valley High School. He was survived by his wife and four children. Months after the tragedy, Lincoln asked Smith to join him and his son for a Father's Day race.

In a show of support and unity, Smith's teammates are now part of the group that participates in the event, running for more than just a medal.

Smith placed third overall in his age group at the 2015 edition of the race, and he believes that his father was proudly watching him as he competed.

"Every year, I know my father is cheering me on from above, and I'm proud to honor his memory by participating in this race annually," Smith said.
